Clinical Trainer · Obstetric & Vascular Ultrasound
Nairobi, Kenya
Esther Njeri Muturi is a diagnostic radiographer and sonographer with five years in a high-volume Nairobi imaging practice. Her speciality is the demanding end of obstetric scanning — basic fetal echocardiography, chromosomal screening and pre-eclampsia risk assessment — alongside vascular work that few trainers in the region cover.
She teaches the obstetric and vascular components of the POCUS programme. Both are areas where a trainee's technique either produces a diagnostically useful image or does not, and her teaching reflects that: exam protocol optimised to the clinical question, accurate documentation, and the patient communication that makes a difficult scan possible.
At Sonar Imaging Centre in Nairobi she conducts ultrasound, CT and X-ray examinations and drafts reports for clinical decision-making, assists in ultrasound-guided biopsies and FNA procedures, optimises exam protocols for specific clinical indications, runs routine equipment checks and first-line troubleshooting, and supervises and mentors interns. She has maintained full compliance in patient documentation and imaging records through PACS.
Two achievements stand out from her time at Sonar. She integrated basic fetal echocardiography and 11–13 week scanning for chromosomal abnormalities and pre-eclampsia into routine antenatal care — moving specialist screening into everyday practice. And she led the introduction of upper-limb Doppler mapping for haemodialysis arteriovenous fistulas and their post-operative follow-up, a service with direct consequences for renal patients.
She trained in echocardiography and electrocardiography at The Nairobi West Hospital and holds Fetal Medicine Foundation certification in both nuchal translucency and pre-eclampsia screening. She completed the Aspire Leaders Programme run by the Aspire Institute at Harvard Business School in 2025, has led a Sonar Imaging Centre branch team in Meru, built the orientation programme for incoming radiography interns, and volunteers as a sonographer with RAD-AID International.
